25 February 1997 IGDATA.TXT
These data were used in my early work on Interest Groups (AJPS, 1981;
Psychometrika, 1984; APSR, 1985; Psychometrika, 1990). They were
compiled by myself and Steve Daniels at the University of Oregon and
Carnegie-Mellon University 1978-81 from publications by the Interest
Groups.
In addition to this text file there are 3 data files: IGDATA.DAT which
contains the Interest Group ratings; INTGRP.DAT which is a file containing
the abbreviations for the Interest Groups; and INTSD.DAT which shows what
years a particular interest group issued data. This information is also
contained in the Table below.
****************************************************************************
Format for IGDATA.DAT (Interest Group ratings 1959 - 1981):
First Record (lx,I4,lx,I3,lx,I2,lx,59Il)
Subsequent Records (2x,I3,lx,I5,2x,Il,lx,I2,lx,llAl, ___I3)
In the first record are the variables:
1. Year (1959-1981) I4
2. Number of Congressmen I3 (# Senators + # Reps, the
Senators are stacked on
on top the Reps)
3. Number of Interest Groups
Issuing Ratings I2
4. Indicator variables for
the 59 Interest Groups
in the Dataset 59Il = 1 if in the year;
= 0 if not (see INTGRP.DAT
description below)
In the subsequent records are the variables:
1.Counter which goes from 1
to the number of congressmen I3
2. ICPSR ID # I5 (Corrected by P&R)
3. Party Code Il = 1 if Democrat
= 2 if Republican
4. State Code (ICPSR) I2
5. Name llAl
6. Interest Group Ratings ___I3 = 999 if Missing
Note that the ratings for 1959 are stacked on those for 1960 etc. You
can easily extract any set of ratings you want with a simple program.
The file INTGRP.DAT gives the abbreviations used for the 59 interest
groups and gives the two digit number for the group. The groups are
in the same order as the 59 indicators in the IGDATA.DAT file. This
file is used to find what groups are in what year. The format of the
file is:
(I2,6Al)
Attached is a table that gives the full names of the interest groups
corresponding to the abbreviations. The file INTSD.DAT shows what
years a particular interest group issued data. The format of the file
is:
(3x,I2,lx,I2,lx,6Al,2x,I2)
where the variables are:
1. Interest group number (1 - 59) I2
2. Number of years the I.G.
Issued ratings (max=23) I2
3. Abbreviation 6Al
4. Vector of Years __I2
