114th Congress Roll Calls
The data listed below are current as of 25 March 2015.
113th Senate Roll Call Data (Text File)
113th Senate Roll Call Data (Stata File)
113th Senate Roll Call Data (EViews 6 File)
113th Senate Dictionary (Comma Delimited Text File)
The format of the roll call files is:
1. Congress Number
2. ICPSR ID Number: 5 digit code assigned by the ICPSR as
corrected by Howard Rosenthal and myself.
3. State Code: 2 digit ICPSR State Code.
4. Congressional District Number (0 if Senate)
5. State Name
6. Party Code: 100 = Dem., 200 = Repub. (See PARTY3.DAT)
7. Occupancy: ICPSR Occupancy Code -- 0=only occupant; 1=1st occupant; 2=2nd occupant; etc.
8. Last Means of Attaining Office: ICPSR Attain-Office Code -- 1=general election;
2=special election; 3=elected by state legislature; 5=appointed
9. Name
10 - to the number of roll calls + 10: Roll Call Data --
0=not a member, 1=Yea, 2=Paired Yea, 3=Announced Yea,
4=Announced Nay, 5=Paired Nay, 6=Nay,
7=Present (some Congresses, also not used some Congresses),
8=Present (some Congresses, also not used some Congresses),
9=Not Voting
For frequency counts for the roll call data see Democrat and Republican
Party Voting Splits Congresses 35 - 113.
The roll call vote files have the same format as the files furnished
by the ICPSR for Congresses 1 - 101. The ICPSR ID numbers assigned
to members elected before the 102nd Congress are continued in these
files. New members have been assigned unique numbers. In the
Senate, if a newly elected member served previously in the House,
he/she was given the ICPSR ID number used in the House. If a newly
elected member did not serve in Congress before, then numbers
beginning with 49100 were used in the 102nd Senate; numbers beginning
with 49300 were used in the 103rd Senate; numbers beginning with
49500 were used in the 104th Senate; and numbers beginning with 49700
were used in the 105th Senate; numbers beginning with 49900 were
used in the 106th Senate; numbers beginning with 40100 were used
in the 107th Senate; numbers beginning with 40300 were used
in the 108th Senate; numbers beginning with 40500 were used
in the 109th Senate; numbers beginning with 40700 were used
in the 110th Senate; numbers beginning with 40900 were used
in the 111th Senate; numbers beginning with 41100 were used
in the 112th Senate; and numbers beginning with 41300 were used
in the 113th Senate. In the 102nd House, numbers beginning
with 29100 were assigned new members; numbers beginning with 29300
and 39300 were assigned new members in the 103rd House; numbers
beginning with 29500 were assigned new members in the 104th House;
and numbers beginning with 29700 were assigned new members in the
105th House; numbers beginning with 29900 were assigned new members
in the 106th House; numbers beginning with 20100 were assigned
new members in the 107th House; numbers beginning with 20300 were assigned
new members in the 108th House; numbers beginning with 20500 were
assigned new members in the 109th House; numbers beginning with
20700 were assigned new members in the 110th House; numbers
beginning with 20900 were assigned new members in the 111th House; numbers
beginning with 21100 and 31100 were assigned new members in the 112th House; and
numbers beginning with 21300 were assigned new members in the 113th House.
Only Yes (1), No (6), Not Voting/Not Ascertained (9), and Not in
Congress at the time of the Roll Call (0) are recorded. The Yes-No
marginals will usually match those reported by Congressional
Quarterly for the Senate but the House marginals will differ in the
102nd and 103rd because the voting of delegates from D.C. and the
various territories is not recorded. In addition, Congressional
Quarterly codes for pairs and announceds and corrects its data if a
member later changes his or her vote.
Below is the dictionary file for the 113th Senate from the Thomas
website. The text of the
dictionary file can also be downloaded:

Descriptions of the roll calls can be found in various Congressional
Quarterly publications.
